No.9:  Mongentua
Standing approximately 14 spaniels high, the Mongentua is an enormous beast, but a benign and peaceful one. Despite being so massive, this creature is rarely spotted. A master of camouflage, it stays unseen by standing perfectly still and exuding a sense of inadequacy and inferiority. This extremely successful tactic means that most people neither know nor care that the Mongentua is there.
The mysteries of its mating habits have yet to be discovered, although it is known that it breeds only once in its 8 minute lifetime, spawning approximately a thousand clammy hatchlings at once. Most of these are devoured by crows the moment they emerge. The few that survive begin instinctively sucking on their mother’s hair, dissolving it with a corrosive mucus, and ingesting its goodness. They then gnaw on her skin, muscles and giblets, until all that’s left is a delicate white skeleton.
These bones remain standing until the next time it rains, whereupon they dissolve, enriching the land.
